Sorcerer Kings
Trevor jerked erect as the Ark fed data to him, then swiveled to face Anput where she sat reading a book against the neighboring obelisk. Theyâd been sitting so long that his back hurt, but finally, something was happening.
âWeâve got movement at the entrance. Someone is making their way up the main corridor.â He rose silently to his feet and waited for Anput to pad after him, then headed for the ramp leading up and out of the pyramid.
They trotted up the ramp, but this time Trevor did not gather the shadows around him. Instead, he gave himself the ability to project a telekinetic bubble of exceptional force and then created a field around himself and Anput as they neared the area where the Ark told him that the visitors were.
They were moving at an unhurried walk, about a dozen hominids, all of whom apparently had the ability to shape. Trevor glanced down and realized that jeans and a hoodie werenât the best way to introduce himself.
When they rounded the intersection and saw the visitors, though, he didnât feel so bad. A dozen people in mismatched parkas and other heavy snow gear, every bit of it scavenged, began removing their clothing, puddles forming wherever they stood.
They chatted in a language that Trevor didnât recognize, much less know, but that was an easy fix. He quested outward with his shaping as he stepped into the light and drew their attention. âMy name is Trevor, and I am the Ark Lord here. I offer you my language as a gesture of good faith. Can you understand me?â
Nervous chuckling came from several of the new arrivals.
âMan, you can save that fancy sorcerer act for the elders.â A young woman with ebony skin and wild hair rolled her eyes in Trevorâs direction. âMost of us speak English as fluently as you do. Couple donât. They mostly keep to the old ways. A lot of them came up from the south. Things are bad down there. Worse with the sun gone.â
âAnd you are?â Anput stepped from the shadows, her posture and bearing every bit the first age goddess.
âNameâs Zera.â The woman inclined her head in Anputâs direction, cats sizing each other up from a distance. âMy people and I saw this place suddenly come to life. Weâre hungry. Cold. Dying. We hoped there would be shelter.â
âAnd there is.â Blair nodded back the way theyâd come. âThereâs food, fuel, stoves, and blankets enough for all. Not a ton, but we can keep you eating for a few days and then start thinking about where we can get more.â
âWhy would you do this?â A tall man with very dark skin and a bald pate stepped forward. His hand rested on a machete belted at his side. âI would see the hook before I taste the bait.â
âThatâs smart.â Trevor nodded appreciatively. âWeâre here because weâre hoping to get our sun back. Getting our sun back means learning more about an old legend called the Aranara. Something from India, but weâre hoping that there are mentions elsewhere or maybe a similar myth.
